Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Purpose and Significance of the Present Study
1.1.1 Purpose of the Present Study
Schema is a person’s existing concepts about the world, in other words, it is the knowledge structures acquired previously, which include linguistic knowledge, cultural knowledge and so on. Since schema theory was first advanced by the German psychologist I. Kant in 1781, many language scholars have been doing a lot of deep discussions and researches. Many scholars at home and abroad have done a lot of successful work on how to apply the schema theory in English reading, listening, oral English teaching, and put forward many effective solutions. However, few people researched schema theory in English vocabulary teaching, especially in higher vocational college English vocabulary learning strategies. So the influence of schema theorybased instruction on higher vocational college English vocabulary learning strategies will bring new ideas and methods for vocabulary teaching. It provides theoretical and practical basis for changing the traditional vocabulary teaching mode. The study is not limited to the surface of the language system, but involves deep structure language systems. A schema theorybased study on vocabulary teaching makes full use of existing knowledge system to understand and memorize the new words, and eventually builds a more complete and perfect vocabulary knowledge system. The starting point of subject will be the present situation of English vocabulary teaching of higher vocational colleges, and then illustrates how to use schema theory in vocabulary teachingthereby can affect vocabulary learning strategies. The investigation attempts to provide new perspective in English vocabulary teaching of higher vocational college.
1.1.2 Significance of the Present Study
According to British famous linguist Wilkins (1972) in Language and Language Teaching: “without grammar, very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed.” Vocabulary is the construction materials of language. If language learners’ vocabulary is poor, they would face many unthinkable difficulties in aspects of listening, speaking, reading and writing, they would not correctly express their feelings and ideas. In English study, vocabulary learning is always a big problem for the learners. However, vocabulary teaching has not been paid due attention to. The past years have witnessed a frenzied expansion of the higher vocational colleges. Many schools, however, have just focused on scale expansion, but neglected quality improvement. The basis of students’ English is poor. Most students’ vocabulary is small, many teachers have urged to strengthen students’ vocabulary learning, but not provided effective vocabulary learning strategies, the vocabulary learning ability and the effect of classroom teaching is not quite well. Therefore, how to overcome the higher vocational students’ vocabulary learning difficulties, improve the effectiveness of vocabulary teaching should be a problem that English researchers should summarize and consider.
As a leader of teaching activities,the teacher should help students find good recipe of learning vocabulary,especially help them develop effective learning strategies. The teacher could start with cognitive characteristics of vocabulary acquisition. Cognitive linguistics is a combination of cognitive science and linguistics. Schema theory is a kind of theory model used in cognitive psychology to explain psychological process. The schema theory can be used to construct a bridge between cognitive characteristics and vocabulary learning. There is a vast sea of vocabulary in English. It would not be a scientific practice that learners only depend upon the memorization. Based on schema theory, the study discusses how to use it in vocabulary teaching process, guide student to activate and construct it, conduct vocabulary learning of the students and foster vocabulary learning strategies. The study combines theory with practice. It is a useful application of schema theory, at the same time, also favorably makes use of various means to learn and master English vocabulary, and provides the beneficial reference for vocabulary learning.
Therefore, it is of important theoretical value and practical significance to study English vocabulary acquisition of higher vocational colleges in the new perspective of schema theory.
1.2 Structure of the Thesis
The thesis includes five chapters. Chapter One briefly introduces the purposes and significance of this study. Chapter Two briefly provides previous researches on schema and vocabulary learning strategies and present situation of domestic and foreign research. Chapter Three briefly provides research design and methodology, including the research questions, subjects, materials, instruments, procedure and data collection. Chapter Four is the data analysis and discussion, including analysis of the scores, questionnaire and interview results. Chapter Five is conclusion, including summary of major findings, implications, limitations and suggestions.
